Xena's Pre-Novice/Novice class
« on: January 16, 2008, 11:16:00 AM »
Geeze, so hung up on Dash and his "issues" that I've forgotten to mention that Xena is in a Pre-Novice/Novice combo class (not enough people for two, so they put us together and we cover most of the same stuff).  She's doing really well, it's just me (as a handler) that needs to do most of the work.  She's catching on to heel MUCH better than I expected - I never trained her to be all that reliable w/loose-lead walking so I wasn't sure how quickly I could shape her up.  I know the two things are pretty separate, but I just wasn't so certain she'd be ok with walking right next to me.

She is doing very well, I don't have to treat her that often and she keep her head up and eyes on me a really impressive percentage of the time - esp. considering class is held in a livestock pavilion with animal droppings/smells and other dog's missed treats in the sawdust.

Last night she seemed to forget how to stay though - I was a bit frazzled in a couple exercises so I'm sure I didn't help.  At one point we did a "stand/stay relay" where one person did the exercise, then the asst. held their dog (owner put it in a sit or down stay first) and went to be "judge" for the next person.  When I turned back from "judging" the other dog, she was swiveling in a circle - still in a down w/her hip tucked to one side, almost "swimming" like little pups do when they first move around.   ::)

She was also thrown off by the "peekaboo recall" when someone holds your dog and you walk away periodically turning around and praising them.  She thought she should come to me when I turned.  I put her back in a sit and tried again, and this time she hesitated to come to me since I'd corrected her last time she tried.

I'm having fun and really enjoy the instructors approach, she does a lot of skill building "games."  Only complaint is that sometimes I can't hear her but the building's heat fans are really loud, so we just had to keep telling her to speak up!

Doubtful I'll get pics, at least not for a little while.  Aaron is all tied up w/school work and every time I've tried to 'rally' a volunteer I get people warning me "I take really bad pics" (and they aren't lying!)

Yeah, one asst. trainer pointed out I was holding the treat so far back (practically against my hip) that Xena had to actually back away from me - out of position - to get her treat.  Duh!  But when I moved my hand forward and started walking again, I was doing this weird little skippy walk 'cause I couldn't concentrate on walking at a good clip and holding the treat in the right place - about halfway through I was able to even out and do both, lol.
