Xena has gingival hyperplasia (overgrown gums)
«

I'd noticed a minor amount of gum growth around Xena's back teeth a couple months ago, but I re-checked on Sunday and some of her back teeth at just little tips peeking out of her gums!
So I made an appt. with my vet today to have them looked at - Vet is going to get me a referral to Cornell or a guy in Buffalo that is almost certainly the same guy who did Ca$h's gums a while back. The vet thinks we can safely wait a month or two, but doesn't want to let it go any longer. Cornell sometimes has a 6 month wait -- between that and their propensity to charge an arm and a leg, I'm thinking we may be heading to Buffalo.
Not a great shot, since Xena's jowls are hard to get out of the way, but here are her toofers - the little tips peeking out *used* to look like actual teeth! I couldn't get a shot of her lower front teeth, but they are practically little white nubs.
The rest of the visit was mostly spent saying how fabulous Xena looked and what a sweetie she was - the vet tech gave her two treats at the beginning and Xena tried to work her the entire rest of the visit, lol. I also picked up some medicated pads (Malaseb but diff. brand name) to help fight the pups' yeasty toes.

Oh poor gal! Hope everything goes well with her surgery.
The pads, were they dermachlor? Think that's the name. Our vet gave us a shampoo to try out for Grady, but I'm leary about another chemical.
He mentioned they also had wipes in the same brand that we could try on his feet.

Jill - Thanks. I'll be interested to see who my vet was talking about, she couldn't remember the name of the guy off-hand.
Dawn - The wipes are Mal-A-Ket, same meds at Malaseb spray. I honestly didn't look at the ingredients since it was a topical other forum members used without issue. The Selsin foot soaks have been fighting back the yeast, but not enough to make it go away completely (not to mention soaking both pup's feet takes an hour to do).

Interesting. Keep me posted how it goes. I've felt that the selsun stuff just acts as a bandaid for us. No matter how much we scrub, he still continues to grow yeast everywhere. I'm starting to think it's allergy related, as my vet also thought so too (watery eyes, he's smellin funny, and gettin it around his "boys"), so I think any amount of topical treatment isn't really going to work well for him. But I'd still be interested in how it works for Xena.

Seems gingival hyperplasia is going around too, eh? Romy's back teeth look a lot like Xena's. I remember Ca$h's surgery and how fast he healed from it - I hope Xena's procedure goes as smoothly!

Thanks - the one thing I'm worried about is that once it starts, it comes back.
Here I was thinking she'd become the "cheap" pup of the two!

Well, it looks like we are going to Cornell afterall. I've got a tenative appt. on March 8th. A bunch of folks in my club work at the Cornell Vet School and they are giving rave reviews of Dr. Rawlingson, the dental vet. As a bonus, I may be able to get an employee discount (gotta see, may only apply to regular vet care) and some of the club members work in anesthesia so they may be the ones actually putting her under. I'm going to see if that's a possibility for sure, so they can keep an eye on my girl.

Since you have to have the surgery on her, I'm glad it is at Cornell since you have a good dental vet and
that your friends will be in there with her keeping an eye on her and you know for sure they won't use ACE

Yeah, I was wondering why her tugging had gotten even more pitiful than it was, but it makes sense when you see her teeth, esp. in the back!

Good luck to her and the surgery, are they doing the laser surgery?
Our girl Savanna
had gingival hyperplasia, we never had surgery done on her since it never really caused any problems. Hers mostly affected her front teeth and canines, her one canine had almost completely disappeared by the time she was 8.

Update: Cornell had to bump back Xena's surgery until March 22nd.
Still within the two month window my vet wanted, but I was hoping to handle it sooner. She's still not showing any signs of pain and her gums are all healthy pink, but I'm worried her teeth are suffering.
