This comes from the thread about Tara (HayleyDani's dog) being spayed.  Hayley and other "across the pond" members mentioned experience with a dog carrying around a toy as a "baby" after their spay and being moody a bit like a false pregnancy. The dogs in question all seem to have had at least one heat before their spay though.

Have any US/Canada members had experience with this phenomenon in their own female? Spaying after one or more heats and going through false pregnancy symptoms?

My current theory is that these dogs may be spayed closer to their heat than most US vets will risk it, so they have a high level of hormones and suddenly no repro organs to put them to use.

Nope! Star was spayed earlier this year after several heats, and she was just about in heat when she was spayed - and she never had any symptoms of a false pregnancy.
But, then again, she never showed symptoms of a false pregnancy when she went through a heat cycle anyway.

But maybe it is true for those bitches that did show symptoms of a false pregancy.....

I found a starving dog years ago and brought it home.  She came into heat and afterwards she took one of Danielle's dolls and hid behind the couch like it was her baby.  That lasted for a week or so, then she was fine.  Then she got spayed and it never happened again.

Joyce - So it didn't happen right after the spay? That's the issue at questions, bitches going through a false pregnancy immediately after a spay.

No. After the spay she was fine.  She went through the false pregnancy after the heat.

I guess it is possible that removing the sex hormones causes a sudden drop in hormones (thereby causing the body to feel as if it's whelped a litter), but like you said, I've not spayed a bitch so close to her season to know for sure.
