He views it as a puppy version of wal-mart? the puppies there are often more expensive than appropriately bred ones!

I once had a friend and we would walk the mall a lot. I loved to go play with the puppies at Petland because I felt that was one small service I could do them. My friend was in love with Shiba Inus and every time we went to Petland, she would say that if she saw a Shiba, she might have to consider it. After many-a-lecture from me on the evils of Petland, she still didn't understand.

She said that those dogs needed rescuing too!

As fellow philosophy major, I felt that she could see the reasoning behind not supporting puppy mills at the expense of a single puppy's happiness in escaping those horrid cages a few weeks earlier.

She just never, ever understood Sad

Luckily, she hasn't gotten a Shiba, yet. I've been able to turn her onto a local Shiba rescue since our strolls in the mall have come to an end. I still don't feel confident that she wouldn't impulse buy a Shiba from Petland if she had the opportunity.

Sigh......one of my young coworkers (of the newest round of clueless, lazy teenagers) was asking me a few weeks ago about puppies and where he could find a bulldog pup.

I went through the whole spiel for 4 days about rescue, responsible breeders, etc.......and after all that he ended up getting a pup he found in the Washington Post.

I guess I should have known better. I mean, what rescue or reputable breeder would place a pup with a high school senior? Not to mention one with an "I want it now" attitude?

Spoiled kid with his stupid Mercedes SUV.......

Oh, surprise surprise! He just found out today that his new pup has a heart murmur. The vet said it's a grade 5 (on a scale of 1-6). That seems awfully high, so we're all trying to get him to take her to another vet.

Oh, and he didn't get her from a newspaper. He found a "breeder" online (on some sort of recommended breeder site). Apparently it was still a cruddy breeder since he got the pup at 7 weeks.

Okay, the latest news with the coworkers bulldog pup:

He took her to see another vet for a second opinion, and this one says she needs surgery on her heart. Even though the kid's father is loaded, I doubt he'll be willing to pay for the surgery. He told me his dad didn't want to pay for a second opinion.

I'm sad as hell for the pup, but I have absolutely no sympathy for him. He asked my advice, I gave it to him (health tests health tests health tests, get proof) and he blew me off.
