we've had this problem for awhile, and it doesnt seem to be getting any better with what i have tried.

yesterday it was too hot to go for a walk, so i went outside to throw the wubba around and samson was fetching it and bring it back, but after throwing it a few times he decided it would be more fun to run full speed at mom and jump on her.
when he does this is always turn my back to him and dont look at him, sometimes he will keep jumping at me and sometimes he will get it and leave me alone. he jumps all over my back and leaves scraches confused

its like he gets too excited and i cant get him to calm down confused

Have you tried giving him a time out when he does it?

Maybe you could walk away and go inside?  Then when he calms down try again?

Griff does the same thing (although he doesn't leave any marks).....I initiate/encourage/allow it - but I can also make him stop on command.  It's a game we play, and it gets him really "up."  I plan to use it to get him amped during agility training.

First, you need to decide if you want to not allow the behavior at all, or just allow the behavior on YOUR terms.  Some people probably wouldn't want to play the game I play with Griff....totally understandable.  Either way, I think he needs correction, not just ignoring when it happens.  You might have to raise your voice a bit and give a firm "enough!" if he won't stop when you tell him to.

Give him a firm OFF or NO or whatever word you use and put him in the house or a room by himself for a couple minutes.

I have allowed jumping on my only on my terms . All my dogs were first trained not to jump at all . I then used a que for them to jump up on my to get them pumped ( though Edy needs no help   Roll Eyes ) .

I have found that a down is better then a sit . Does he have a reliable and good down ?

Maybe when you see him approaching at full speed or approaching to jump give him a very firm down , then stay for a minute or two .

I trained mine NOT to jump on me...I never have to worry about that one thankfully...but the retreiving is another story!

I should clarify.... I don't just allow Griff to jump on me any time he wants.  I "start it" when I want to play or just get him riled up.  laugh4

I've got both a command for them to jump on me and an "invitation" for jumping/wrestling type behavior.

Keri - Do you let him jump on you in other situations? Does he have an "off" command that you could use?  Depending on the situation, it might work to walk *into* him when he's jumping - just forward enough to bump him and unbalance him.  You'd have to feel pretty confident it wouldn't hurt him though... this is something I'd try with Dash on a soft surface, but I wouldn't try with Xena at all.

Do you have an "off" command you use for things like "get off the couch" ??

I think that's fine....but in situations like you described in the original post where he won't settle down, I think that is when you can use an "Off" or an "Enough."  Or whatever your command is.  If you're being boring and he's not quitting, that strategy isn't working and he's just going to think it's okay to keep doing it since he's not being told otherwise.

It does sound like ignoring him is not enough , I think adding a very strong off (or down -whatever you choose ) command will help out . He may not think jumping is off limits without a verbal command . Just that you are still playing just turning around .
