Getting the tail up
« on: August 18, 2007, 06:34:55 PM »
without me having to hold it up ?    I was wondering what you all do to get the tail to stand up for more then a  few seconds .

This is what I have been doing ......  I hold the tail up and say tail , then I let go .  If Conley holds his tail up w/o my help I give a treat .

Is this how you all do it ????  If not what trick do you use ?

Thank you in advance  ;)

Try reverse shaving it underneath. Not sure why it works for some dogs, but it does. Maybe it has something to do with allowing the cool air to get to a place that isn't used to feeling cool air? It doesn't work for others though, so I'd try it a few weeks before the show. If it works, let the fur grow back out and shave it again before the show. I've also heard of people putting something underneath (was it Vicks?) to make it cool and get it to stand.

It can also be a confidence issue. My puppies have gone through a phase during which they're not so sure of themselves and we have "tail issues" during that time period. Just worked on building confidence, gave them a few months and they grew out of it with no issues at all.

I had been told to scratch/rub under the tail when teaching them to hold the tail up .

When you have him stacked -Lift the tail give a few little scratches under his tail and let it go .If it goes down again give another scratch. All while trying to keep him stacked.
I have done this with all of mine and it has worked for me . I have also seen alot of prof handlers do this in the ring when they are first stacking the dogs .

Hope this helps.

Yup, how true! At recent shows my hubby was giving me grief because Skye's tail wasn't up when she was stacked and I told him that with 2 hands there was a limit to what I could do, as everytime I moved my hand to tickle her tail something else went awry with her stack. Sigh!!!

All I do though is get my dogs used to having their tails messed with - lots of tickling to get it standing, and that is about it. AND lots of socialization to get them used to all sorts of environments and situations so that they are not overwhelmed in the show ring.

Even if we could show, Arbie would be no good at at it cause if you go anywhere near his tail he wil tuck it in close and it's like a vice, There is no way he will put in an upright position if it's touched.

Yep , Conley will clamp his tail too  :laugh4:    and I have to pry it out of his BUTT  LOL .   His tail is docked a little too short for my liking .  I perfer a longer docked tail .

Conley will hold his tail up for like 4 sec. w/out my help . But as soon as I start fussing with him ..... there goes his tail   ::) .   I am going to start him in the handling classes soon .   So that will help out alot .........

Also finding bait or a toy that he REALLY likes will help with that.. AND, ONLY give him that bait or toy when you are show working him.  With Cass it is actual liver and his SQUIRREL ( Dr. Noys Toys) he LOVES them.   IF he even sees his squirrel he starts to stack now!  That helps a lot.
I play more than work with Cass, I wrestle with him, and play tug.
The tail will come with interest and practice, it is just a matter of making sure you aren't making it an issue.  When you make it an issue, they do, and then you have caused a BIG problem!
