barking at people
« on: March 20, 2007, 12:32:35 PM »
Kalia has always been fine riding in the car until we got Atlas. Atlas was scared to death at first and now that he's more comfortable in the car he whines and barks the whole time. Any time we stop at a light or pass a person on the sidewalk they both bark and bark. It's so annoying. We yell at them, tell them no, make the "wrong noise" we make for bad behavior and they could care less. It's like they know we are up front and can't do anything about it. When they see someone from a distance (in the car or out) they will growl a little and bark until we either pass the person or the person stops to greet them. Any tips on breaking this behavior?

I have no idea either. Our dogs are actually quieter in the car than at the house.  Jax barks when anybody comes to the house, but if someone approaches the car, he doesn't bark.

Do you get your dogs riled up before they get in the car?  We always tease Jax and tell him we're going for a ride probably 10 minutes before we actually go somewhere - then he's all excited.  If you do that, you might want to stop because maybe that makes them hyper.  But if you don't do that, then I'm not sure what it could be.

nope we dont wind them up before going. In fact we've even been putting their harnesses on hours before we leave so they arent excited by the time we leave (they get excited when the harness goes on). It's so annoying and I dont know what started it...all I know is I am sick of having a headache by the time we get somewhere with them.
