Handling - I figured it out
« on: June 12, 2007, 09:59:18 AM »
I had been having this problem with handling Edy . She just gets soooo excited when the judge goes over her , she starts wiggling uncontrollably as soon as the judge approaches her . She has even rolled over for a belly rub from the judge  .

Last night at handling class she was acting as usual getting excited everytime it was our turn . The teacher was great with her , he ignored the behavior and went about touching her .
About half way thru the class when it was our turn she began to wiggle when the teacher approached , instead of telling her to stay and no when she wiggled I mistakenly told her to leave it . And she did not get as excited , I saw a big difference the first time I said it so I told her again to leave it . She still wiggled but she stayed standing and was not trying to lick the teacher and turn around to see him .

So again on our next turn I repeated the leave it , she did even better . By the end of the class she did a perfect stack the teacher went over her 3 times and she never moved , she wagged her tail a bit but that was all . All 4 feet stayed on the ground and in the same spot . she turned her head to look at him but then I baited her to look ahead again and she did it and stayed that way .

For me this is a huge break-thru   ;D. I was getting discouraged and though I would never get her out of this habit and be able to show her  . I can not believe that all it took was a different command , one that I did not even think to use -it just slipped out .

That is awesome! I'm so glad you figured out a way to get Edy's attention and keep her semi-still during shows.  Hopefully she won't roll over for any more belly rubs!

Congrats.  I remember the first time I got Beas to stop wiggling.  He still likes to give kisses the female judges though

Whoo hoo Missi and Edy!  :2thumbsup: Sounds like you guys are ready for your next show!!  Those puppy wiggles are the best.  :)

Here's Bru's first judge-wiggle at his very first match.  He shocked us by taking a Group 1! *sigh* they grow up so fast!!   :smitten:

wow that's great that you accidentally figured that out. 'Leave it' is the magic term for Otis too.
