Merrick Canned
« on: March 19, 2007, 01:25:36 PM »
I bought Zoe some Merrick canned food and one of the flavors is called Wingaling (or something like that!  ;))  Anyways I was shocked to see that it contained whole chicken wings, bones and all.  I was afraid to give her the whole thing so I took the bones out, I am assuming they are okay or else they wouldnt put them in there.  ?????  Am I being an overprotective mom?   :o

If the bones were cooked then that would freak me out.  if it was some kind of raw food then maybe ok, but why would it not be frozen.

WEIRD!!

A NOTE FROM THE CHEF: please read before feeding. Our slow cooked whole chicken wings offer marinated tender chicken cooked on a softened bone. THIS SPECIAL COOKING PROCESS MAKES THE BONE MUSHY AND SAFE FOR YOUR DOG TO ENJOY. Feel free to serve whole or to break apart the chicken and soft bones for ease of pet consumption.

Still freaks me out tho.  :blank:

You know, I think I remember from BoxerPerson's post in homecooking that pressure cooked bones are safe to eat.  But I'd double check before feeding it of course!

It's perfectly safe. Fromm's chicken thighs entree is the same way. My girls LOOOOOVE the whole thighs with the bones in. Yes, if you pressure cook bones long enough they are fine to feed. Dale Ulmer of BoxerLife has been feeding Lou and Ems that way for years. Next time try mushing the bones with a fork, you'll see.

I read that too, I used to feed the merrick canned to Gemini, and just stayed away from the foods that had the "whole chicken" in them...it shocked me the first time I saw them too,

Now I switched Gemini to raw too ::) since she seems to be staying longer than I thought

I bought Merrick canned once and Josh was freaked out by the bones too.  The food smelled so good though, but the boys didn't like it as much as the Nutro canned I usually buy them.

It's just pressure cooked bone.....nothing wrong with it. Like was said above. Try mushing a piece with your utensil......nothin to worry about.

I was totally floored by it when I first saw it, and I had to pick the bones out and mash them with a fork to see how soft they were, but after that I was satisfied. And my dogs LOOOOOVE that stuff. I love giving it to them because it's real food in a can, not unidentifiable mush.
