pressure cooking times? How to?
« on: May 23, 2007, 09:59:55 AM »
How long should things cook in a pressure cooker to soften the bones?

For example I have a few deer necks that I want to cook in the pressure cooker they are about 2.5lbs each.

How long should I cook them?  How much water should I add to pressure cooker?

I think it only cooks at 15lbs of pressure.

Never used one before so any advice would greatly be appreciated of course I know not to remove the lid till it has cooled and the pressure has released but other then that, I am a pressure cooker virgin  :laugh4:

I would do it for about 3 hours after it reaches temp. and starts doing the jiggling thingy.  When I do 20 pounds of chicken or a 20 pound turkey, I do it for 3 hours, at 15 pounds of pressure.  If you are not doing a hugh batch, I would do for 2 hours, turn off, let the pressure go to 0 and check to see if the neck has softened (use a potatoe masher to mash or just get a piece of the bone and squish between your fingers to test, but do this after it has cooled:-)).  If not I would do for another hour after it reached pressure/temp.
