Compatible small breed dogs
« on: April 26, 2014, 07:22:47 PM »
I am thinking of adding a small breed dog to our family as a companion for my son who has Asperger's. I need to figure out what small breed would be most compatible for the boxer personality and with its ruff, noisy play. Anyone know of what might be best to look for?

I think it is more about personality than breed, really. Although I probably would go for a sturdier little breed. I remember address ago, one of the Boxer folks had a Chi mix whose leg was broken by a simple bump/step by her Boxer.

Unless you do a rescue, though, I wouldn't go for one of the really rugged needs like Frenchies or Bulldogs. They can be hard to breed so they are expensive even from crappy breeders.

Yes personality will play a bigger part than breed. I want something sturdy that can handle the occasional being stepped on with nothing broken. I was going to do a rescue and I dont care if it is a pure breed or not.

I think a Boston Terrier would be an excellent choice.

I know people with boxers who have bostons, pugs, or frenchies. They all seem to have enough endurance to keep up with the boxer. But, I agree....it's more about personality and what your boxer can handle.

I've seen a bull terrier with a boxer, they seem to be able to stand up to the boxer personality pretty well.

Personality and whether or not the pup and your son have an instant bond would be the most important. That aside, Bostons, Frenchies and Pugs in general; seem to get on well with boxers. But then again it depends on the dogs, each one is different. Bostons and Frenchies tend to bond well with individuals. All of the pugs I know are a family dog rather than forming stronger bonds with one family member over another.

We have 2 beagles and a boxer (used to be 2, but Brody passed away from lymphoma in October).

Our boxers and beagles get along fantastically - they run and chase each other and play very well together. The beagles aren't tiny (25 pounds), but Riley is 65 pounds and they can keep up and give him a good fight!

I know someone who just got 2 bostons from the same litter. 1 very outgoing and the other scared of everyone and everything .

Just be very careful and make sure the temperment and personality will work for your son and other dogs .
