small handling brag
« on: May 17, 2007, 12:23:21 PM »
Last night I went to a handling match , I figured with a show coming up this weekend I can use all the practice I can get .

I won first place in the novice class  ;D. This gave me a bit more confidence and hopefully I won't be very nervous this weekend .

Way to go!  :2thumbsup:

Here's a trick that many handlers swear by - just before you go in the ring, pop a peppermint candy in your mouth.  It 'hides' the smell of anxiety/fear on your breath, which helps to minimize you dog's anxiety.  (They'll still pick up on your nerves, but it's maybe not quite as 'intense' as it would be.)  Peppermint oil also has a calming and focusing effect.  Of course, I've never personally used this trick - I'm quite certain that if I tried it, I'd end up choking on the peppermint! ;)

Congrats!!!

Focus on it's just you and the dog, forgetting about everyone else (But do remember to pay attention,LOL)

I've never personally used this trick - I'm quite certain that if I tried it, I'd end up choking on the peppermint! ;)

Ditto on that one!

Thanks everyone .

I will try the pepermint , it can't hurt .  I do not think I will have to worry about choking -just eating the whole package

Congrats!! Just remind yourself that it's just another handling class - you're only out there to have fun with your dog. :)
