Nothing is ever simple - Dash med and ears!
« on: July 01, 2013, 06:15:44 PM »
For the last week or so, Aaron and I noticed that Dash was a little grumpier, a little more restless, and a little quicker to reaction. One of the side effects of his incontinence med (Proin) is raised blood pressure which typically manifests in behavior changes.  I wanted to just reduce him to half dose (25mg/2xday) but Aaron was worried and wanted to bring him in. As it happens, I wanted the vet to look at his left ear because it'd been bugging him and he'd be snappier with me when I tried to clean out the little collection of gunk. So off to the vet we went...

Diagnosis is just what we expected - High BP and heart rate, plus Dr. Lyons noticed the difference in his behavior too.  She actually asked us to 1/4 his dose and see if that is enough to get his behavior back to "Dash normal" while still keeping him from leaking.  The ear was yeast which she attributed to something he's allergic to blooming - given all the rain we've had, everything is blooming, so that was no shock.

The cool thing is that rather than giving us ear drops or other meds, she put lanolin packing in to "plug" his ear. The lanolin will seal off the ear and kill the yeast and in a week it should be ready for a good thorough cleaning that *really* gets rid of the gunk.

Thanks guys.  We skipped his Proin last night and he seemed to be feeling better this morning, perky instead of agitated. He's holding his ear normally, so it must not itch too much.   He was a little agitated around dinner, but it was late and he can be kinda grumpy about his dinner anyways.
