ACL surgery
« on: March 06, 2013, 03:35:40 PM »
After talking with the vet on Saturday. It was decided that the best option for Mic is going to be surgery. She felt that even if we could get him to heal up without doing surgery that he would probably just keep reinjurying it. I am so sad about having to do this. We were so close to being out of the woods on his injury. I am going to talk with the other vet about her recommendation on a who should do the surgery. I am hoping to have it done at the end of March. Right now I have a house full of girls in season. So I felt it would be best to wait till they are out.  :(

UGH! I so hate that, but it's hard making those tough decisions on doing what's best. Hoping everything goes well for Mic and know you'll keep us posted as we'll all be thinking of him through the process. Was definitely difficult to do with Rubi, but glad we did it.

Which surgery are you planning on doing? I did the TPLO for Star, it was the best option since it's a pretty strong repair. The TTA is also strong, but the hardware cannot be removed if there's a problem. Star had to have his hardware out due to a post op infection for the first leg, and then a joint infection in 2012.

I go to the Vet Saturday. I will be talking to her about what surgeon and which operation she thinks is best for him. He will probley need the one that will hold up the best. Mic is a very energic dog.

Hardly anyone does it, but Xena had the Hohn Technique and it was fantastic - no hardware or foreign bodies involved, they carve a hook in the bone and pull the tendon across to stabilize the knee.  Once Xena did PT to deal with the atrophy from injury and surgery, her knee was good the rest of her life.  Training obedience jumping wasn't a problem, though she never could have done agility.

Intresting I have never heard of the option. When I talk to the surgion I will ask him which is the strongest. Mic is such a strong dog and so very bouncy that I worry he will tear the repair.
