You probably thought the day would never come... (update)
« on: September 27, 2012, 02:44:14 PM »
and neither did I!

Dash is scheduled to get neutered tomorrow provided that all his blood results including his thyroid, come back normal this afternoon. It isn't a decision we came to lightly and I am still worried about how he'll do, but it seems like the time is right.

I drop him off at 7:50am and they will talk to me about a pickup time when I get there.  Along with the neuter, he is beginning to have some hyperplasia, so the vet will remove any epulis she comes across.  We aren't going for the full gum cutting yet since we aren't sure how he'll do with being put under.  The vet is using a sedative that allows a high level of control so they can pull him out quickly if there is a problem and she is reducing the medication protocols to a minimum (like most vets, they use 2-3 meds for each step in the process - he'll be cut down to 1 wherever possible).

One "funny" thing... she asked me if I wanted his scrotum sack reduced/removed because it is "rather well developed"     She said it counts as another surgery and makes recovery a little more difficult, so I am pretty sure we'll skip it.  We'll just have to get used to a little sad sack swinging in the wind.

Tyson was 15 months old when we got him, and intact. After we had him neutered, he had a "sad little sack". But as time went on, it shrunk! And now, he barely has anything there! Your vet sounds wonderful. Good luck tomorrow!

Well Dash is nearly 6 1/2 yrs old, so his sack has had a lot of time to grow.  But he's still in great physical shape, so hopefully that good muscle tone and elasticity will help him out.  Aaron thinks that maybe we should do the sack snip, I'm still undecided, we have until tomorrow at 8am to make the call.

Boomer was at least 10 when he was neutered when I adopted him. He was very well developed, his sack has decreased in size over the last 5 years. It's really not that bad. He did develop a large seroma after surgery though, the sack just didn't adjust well to being empty at first.  They made his incision about halfway up his penis and pulled the testicles out that way. It's supposed to be less traumatic than going through the scrotum.

:fingerscrossed: everything goes well for Dash today.

Titan was 5-6 when he was neutered , his extra skin did shrink up quite a bit .It did take quite a while though

Poor Dash! I bet he was HOPING this day would never come! LOL But good luck big boy! I'm sure all will be fine. As to the sack snip, I think Bumpy mentioned Keanu's shrinking a while back, but not sure?

Well I dropped him off at 8 and told the doc to use her best judgement. She said she'd remove the testes and see what things looked like. If it looked "ridiculous" she would give it a snip but otherwise she'd leave it alone. His official pickup time is 3:30, but she was going to do him early so he may be ready before then.

:foottapping:  Tom Petty time... "the waiting is the hardest part..."  This is where I get fidgety because they said he was going to be done early and I thought they'd call me when he was out of surgery.  I tried to call and their phone lines were busy.  :wall:
