Dehydrater
« on: May 22, 2012, 10:34:49 AM »
Good Morning,

I'm looking at the idea of getting a food dehydrater to make my own dog treats.

Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences with a certain dehydrater they like? I thought I would get some input before went off and bought one.

Thank you!

There is a thread on here somewhere that I started not too long ago when I was looking for one that contains a ton of really helpful suggestions...I ended up getting the Nesco 500 watt machine with 5 trays.  I like it because it is more powerful than the average 300 watt machine and takes less time to dry your jerky. I do beef strips is like 5 to 6 hours and chicken in 10. I got mine at Bed, Bath and Beyond, utilizing that 20% coupon they are always sending me, so with the coupon I paid $48 plus tax for the 500 watt machine.

One worry was that I would buy it and then not use it...but I can say I have used it every week since I have had it with the excption of two weekends I was out of town...I LOVE it and the J's are nutso over the homemade jerky and I KNOW what is in it and on it...for me it was definately a great investment.

I have done, beef and chicken  jerky ( I get whatever is on sale that week) and I have also done sweet potato strips in mine.

Since so many people are talking about them I have started lookng for one.  I thought they were much more expensive.  I'll have a tone of Bed Bath and Beyond coupons, so I think I will be using one and buying one.  Does it come with recipes or do you just cut the beef, chicken instrips and just lay them out and turn it on? Do you use seasonings.

Joyce it does come with a recipe booklet and suggested marinades for people jerky but for the dogs, I took Claires advice and just sprinkle the meat strips with garlic powder and dry them....it's a big big hit at the Knowles house for sure. I think $48 plus tax for the 500 watt machine is a great price...a friend who lives in the country...waaaaay out in the country just ordered one from Amazon too but she then of course had to pay more because of the S/H...

I know I've already gotten my moneys worth out of it...the J's were hooked and I mean hooked on that darned chicken jerkey from China that I bought for $15 a bag...not only is it cheaper but I know it won't kill them  :furious3:....I haven't bought a dog treat since I bought the machine with the exception of their beloved bully sticks...we are all happy campers over the dehydwatin machine as Joker would call it...nubs start wigglin for sure when I get it out of the box...LOL

Do you put any juice or ascorbic acid on the apples?
