Antler Chews
« on: December 11, 2011, 11:42:26 AM »
Hi, Everyone~
My daughter was considering buying antlers for our pups for Christmas this year and I don't know anything about them.  I did some quick searching on the net just now and there are different grades and sizes of antlers, but very few cautions about heavy chewers, like Boxers can be.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated~
Many thanks!

From reading through some older posts in here, it seems there isn't much negativity about giving Boxers antlers -
Just the usual "...doesn't like them... or won't touch them..."  but no dangers or warnings posted.

So I answered my own question~  ::)

George loves antlers! They are kinda expensive but hold up well and don't really smell or make a mess like bully sticks. I have to buy the bigger size so he doesn't choke or anything.

Mine also love antlers! We get them from bestbullysticks.com. They are expensive, but they last a while. As with any bones, you should always monitor and when they start to break into pieces (Rubi's a pro at this) or splinter, just take em away. I also buy the bigger size as well.

Mine have no time for them!  Chewed a bit and that was it.  Waste of big $$ IMO!  Go for the bullie stix or tripe sticks...less expensive for more and they will actually like them!

Otis loves antlers. He would much rather chew an antler than a bone anyday. They're pretty expensive though.

They are pricey for sure. My two had no use for them. A nice meaty venison bone......hells yes. So in our house they were a waste of money.

Hmm, deer antlers are expensive, eh?  Maybe I should start gathering up all those we find in the forest and from road kill deer and selling them on eBay.  :laugh4:  My dogs will chew on them but prefer other deer parts.

Precious doesn't care much for them, she would rather have a soup bone any day or a plain old bully stick.

I haven't been on this forum for a while and embarrassed to see I didn't thank you all for your comments!

The smell of this antler bone we got from our daughter was yucky I didn't let the dogs have it for very long.  Like a chemical-type smell.    :barf:

Aww, I wonder what was wrong with that antler... I've gotten a couple for my pooches and none have smelled.  I wonder if some are untreated?  Wish I could remember the brands I bought.

Precious doesn't care for antlers but I don't remember any odor.  She loves hooves and they definetly have an odor.

The ones I had no odor, but my guys wouldn't really touch them. They're loving the stuffed bones though.

I get ours from Bestbullysticks.com My dogs love em and they don't stink. I would wonder why yours stink? That doesn't seem right.
