Koda passed the ATTS temperament test
« on: September 01, 2011, 06:32:22 PM »
Here is a video of Koda taking the ATTS temperament test (description of the test here: http://atts.org/tt-test-description/) last Sunday.  He did very well, spooked a little at the umbrella opening but he'd never seen an umbrella in his life, my mistake, should have shown him one before the test, but since he did go investigate and sniff it pretty quickly still scored above average on that exercise as well as every other part of the test, getting a "10" on his response to the weird threatening stranger.  We got compliments on how quickly he can switch from being super friendly to aggressive appropriately on his own depending on the circumstances.  I won't know his exact total score until the results are mailed to me in a couple of weeks or so.  This gives him the "TT" title.  I'm proud of my boy. :)

Thanks, everyone.  :)  Our next title goal is the AD, a 12.4 mile endurance trot/run with me beside Koda on a bike.  I just bought a nice mountain bike to prepare for it, with the trial we're set to enter in mid-October and Koda's already in great shape from running through the forest so much.  Of course he has to have good results from his holter test, echocardiogram and complete physical in a couple of weeks before I enter him.  After that we'll be slowly working towards a BH (Schutzhund obedience title) for a trial in October of 2012, also his RA, then CD and I'd like to try to make him a UKC and possibly IABCA conformation Champion too.  :)

Congrats! Koda did a very good job.

Our club just held one of these and I was bummed I didn't take Xena - until some club members said the gunshot makes it NOT appropriate for sound sensitive dogs.  A club member brought her sound sensitive dog and it just about ruined her   Although I didn't see a gunshot in yours, so maybe that's only used for some of the tests?

Thanks.  There were gunshots, three of them, in Koda's test and I think every test is required to include them and be the same as described on the ATTS page in all other ways too.  They shoot once, checking the dog's reaction while the shooter pauses before shooting twice more in rapid succession.  The shooter is supposed to be well hidden to surprise the dog and you can barely see his tent/blind in the woods on the other side of the fence between the bucket of rocks and the umbrella.  In fact he was so well hidden I forgot about that part of the test and walked past the large cone marker where I was supposed to stop at first, then the judge reminded me and that's why we circled back and stopped at that cone again.  You may have to turn up the volume on your computer to hear the gunshots because my camera doesn't record distant noises very well.  It's obvious when Koda hears the first shot especially though; he immediately stares intently into the woods towards that tent, then after two more shots starts to walk toward the fence, sniffing, whining and trying to see what is back there and then the judge told me to proceed.

I knew Koda wouldn't have a problem with gunfire since he hears it so often around home from hunters and they shoot guns during almost every schutzhund training session, never bothers him.  Is Xena sound sensitive?  I know Artax could never pass this test.  He'd make it through the neutral stranger, the friendly stranger, start to get nervous about the rattling bucket of rocks and then freak at the gunshots and if that didn't stop him from being able to continue the umbrella surely would.  He's also scared of thunder, fireworks and other loud noises.  During our test we had one dog quit after the gunshots because he was too scared to proceed.
