Umm reverse house training?
« on: August 25, 2011, 01:40:58 PM »
So Irene is heading this way and looks like we'll be on the "bad" side of her now. Because we might be hunkering down in the basement for 24 hours or more, I bought some wee wee pads (we're not "braving" the storm to let the pups out).  Any suggestions on how to get Beas and Peas to use them?

Oh gosh!  I have no idea!!!  That would be tricky!  Is your basement carpeted?  I don't blame you one bit for staying inside!  Way too dangerous for a potty break!  Better to clean up the mess on the carpet later!  But maybe to encourage them to use the Wee pad or to let them know it's ok, try putting it outside at one of their favorite pee spots?  Hopefully they will wee on it then and when tehy see them later, they will know it's ok to use?  Maybe (and this is gross and with a baby, I'm not sure you would want to do this) bring in a wee pad that has their urine smell on it and put it under a fresh one or something?  So they smell themselves and know it's ok?  I don't even know if that would work.  Definitely a tricky situation.

There is a product used to train dogs to pee in certain areas that is a post or block that has a phermone or something in it to attract them to pee in that special spot...maybe you could find at petsmart ot petco...

They have those "indoor grass" patches?  You know, looks like a square piece of lawn?  It has like a tray or something under it so that the pee filters through and is caught on something (maybe like a wee pad).  Maybe they would be more apt to use that if it looked like grass?

But maybe Peanut will which may attract Beas.  Do you still have it?

No. Got rid of it. I think we had it when we got Peas and she didn't use it either.

yup. Possibly cat2 when it comes through. And looks like we're gonna be on the bad side.

Let them out during the eye of the storm . That is when it is usally quieted down , no rain or wind .

But if you are going to try a pee pad do it in the garage if you have one . I would hate for the dogs to get the idea that inside the house is not o.k. to potty in .

Those wee pads never worked for me and I tried them with 2 different puppies .

If it's going to be bad enough that you can't get your dogs outside to pee for over 14 hours, then I'd worry (and probably evac)... but really, when pressed, a dog can occasionally hold it for much longer than we'd normally ask them.  Make sure you have some Nature's Miracle in case they don't, but I wouldn't train them to go in the house just on the off chance you're inside a bit long.

Yeah. We're gonna take the dogs into the basement with us and giving them a corner with the wee wee pads (they are never in the basement and shouldn't assoc peeing there with peeing inside)
