Digging to China
« on: June 27, 2011, 09:32:38 AM »
HELP!  Cali has decided to take up digging.  If this were a sport, she'd win a medal.  I can't tell you the size of the latest hole!  HUGE!  Anyway, she and Riley spend the day out side in their run during the working day, weather permitting.  In the past 3 weeks, she's starting digging.  I think it's from boredom.  I tried putting some nylabones in there, but, no deal.  Any ideas.  Anything I can buy that might detour this terrible habit?  I refuse to leave them loose in back yard, even though it's fenced.  And I sure can't leave them loose in the house!  I'd have nothing left.  Help!

Have you tried crating in the house? You do say weather permitting on the outdoor run so what do you do when the weather doesn't permit?

I have no experience with a digger but I would say that in your case it probably is due to boredom. If it were random in the yard digging I have heard to fill the hole with poo and cover it and that will deter but I don't know if that will work in your case.

I would say crate indoors. The only way to stop the digging is to supervise and redirect when she starts digging.

fill the hole with the poop you pick up.  Cover VERY lightly with dirt. And if it still permits, cover the hole with the poop, then chicken wire and then a light cover of dirt.

She and Riley are crated inside if it's too hot or too cold.  I've started putting them in everyday now because of Cali's digging.  I'll try the suggestions you made and see how that goes.  Thanks everyone.

LOL ... I thought of this after I recommended putting poo in the hole....
this may lead to poo covered paws!

Ok.  Today is the poo test!  Last night, as I was picking up poo and putting it in the hole, she was just stairing at me.  Hahaa...  I must have looked like a loon.  We'll see if it works today.   :fingerscrossed:
