little known facts
« on: May 06, 2011, 05:13:25 PM »
I shouldn't be asking this when all the breeders are at ABC but.....

I am a member of a local all-breed club and we have started doing "fun facts" at the end of meetings to introduce other people to the breeds. Almost all of them have little dogs and look at me like I have 3 eyes when I tell them boxers are the best!!  ;D

Can any of you briefly share little known, fun facts about boxers (yes I'm cheating ;) don't tell!) that would be informative and entertaining?

Boxers have the most working group wins and most consecutive working group wins at Westminster (some other things too qt Westminster- can't remember them all but I posted them here last year).

I just saw this topic so it might be too late but you could mention that boxers were once used for hunting boar and other dangerous game. There are many people who don't know that boxers have a serious, hard working side to them since so many are viewed as just bouncy and goofy clowns.

The boar-hunting thing ties into much of the Boxer's structure and appearance, too. For example, the undershot bite allowed the dog to get a better, non-shakeable grip on the prey; the foreshortened muzzle and up-turned nose allowed the dog to breathe while it had a mouthful of skin and fur; the 'furrows' just in front of the eyes funnelled the blood away from the eyes so the dog could still see while it was holding its prey.

Can either of you point me in the direction of info? All I can find says it was the Bullenbeisser that was used for boar hunting? Lots of sources of course state they were used as messengers during WW1 & WW2.
