Xena's Debut in Graduate Novice - Never Give Up!
« on: February 06, 2011, 08:08:53 PM »
So Xena and I went up to Rochester for the DOTCORNY trial today, where they offered one of the "new" optional titling classes, Graduate Novice.  Right at the end of our heeling, a big large, noisy, "scary" heater kicked on directly behind us.  Xena's noise sensitivity made it really hard for her, but she never gave up.  One of the gals from my class said it was like the noise made her lose her place, so she was always fighting to come back and work. She kept trying to work for me and we even had some fun moments.

This was a very interesting performance for me - previously, when we've had trouble, especially things I could not control (like noise), I've felt myself get embarrassed, my nerves would skyrocket, etc. This time, I was able to enjoy everything in the moment - including the end when she auto-finished after avoiding the broad jump, wiggling her little nub as she sat next to me.  :smitten:

I forgot to look at the judge's scoring sheet but we only Q'd on 3 exercises at most, didn't even come close on the others, and yet I've never been prouder of her.

Sorry you didn't Q, but glad you had some positives to come away with.

That heater is really loud. I'm surprised they didn't turn it down so it wouldn't come on, especially if the lower level classes were going on.  I know you are suppose to 'proof' for stuff like that, but that heater is a bit over the top for noise level.

Yeah, it had been coming on about every hour and we thought we were safe, but it came on about 3 times an hour during the lower level classes 'cause everyone was packing up to leave, opening up the doors a bunch and letting all the cold air in.

I am sorry you didn't Q . But I think you gained a lot from this trial . You were able to have fun despite the things going wrong , that to me is a big accomplishment .

I remember after my first DQ , I went back to my truck and cried .

You guys did GREAT!!!! Heck, that thing even scared the bejeebus outta me! lol Xena recovered well and I noticed her focus looks so much better. Great job. I enjoyed watching the GN classes this weekend too. Not many Q's with our trial either, but still a neat class.

Congrats Julia   It looked to me like all of your hard work is paying off - especially with heeling - she looks wayyy better than last time I saw her.

But WOW - that heater was loud - it even scared me when it kicked on.

Thanks guys!

Missi, I know what you mean, I've had some moments of frustrated tears when we've NQ'd, probably the worst when Xena's noise phobia got the better of us at ABC last year. This time was so different, if anything, I felt more relaxed than normal in the ring.

I did try to proof her for that heater prior to going in the ring - we went over when it was off and I had her touch it, work next to it, etc and we went over when it turned out and did the same, even having her sit with her back to it and practice focus.  But I was never able to catch it actually kicking on, which is so much more startling than approaching as it's running.
