Salmon Oil
« on: January 02, 2011, 01:59:24 PM »
For those of you who use salmon oil where do you buy it from?

In the past I have bought the capsules from b-naturals but I am thinking that I want to buy an oil to pump on their food because Trigger NEVER eats his capsules.

After I posted this I saw the thread below about the same issue - and I went to the Wholistic Pet internet site and ordered some.

I think you ought to buy Lox and feed them that!  Mine have enjoyed this holiday immensely since I had a HUGE pkg of Alaskan lox delivered!  Yum for me & them!!!

I got a huge gallon from Wholistic Pet at one of the shows.  Got a good deal.   I try to grab supplies from vendors at shows as I find the prices are hard to beat!

I love Wholistic PEt's salmon oil. Make sure you sign up for their breeder program and you keep your upc's off the bottles and get free bottles after buying so many.

I also switched to feeding salmon rather than fish oil capsules since I found that 1/3 of a 14.75 ounce can of salmon (costs about $2) has over 2000mg of omega-3, more than what they were getting with a few salmon oil capsules which they wouldn't eat voluntarily.  They love the canned fish.  It was recommended to me to give Koda about 2000mg of omega-3 fatty acids per day for his heart, plus six other supplements and not having to add several salmon oil capsules to all his other pills is a relief.  Omega-3s are also great for arthritis which Artax suffers from so each evening I divide one can of salmon among my three dogs, after first draining and rinsing it in a colander to remove most of the added salt.  I wish I could feed raw salmon but it's too expensive.

I found some frozen salmon that was reasonably priced, about $5.00 for 3 pounds. I too use the canned salmon. I stock up when on sale and fill the pantry LOL

I usually pay just under $2 per can of salmon too.  I'd love to be able to find some frozen raw salmon at three pounds for $5 though.  Whenever I've looked at fresh salmon, even if it says "previously frozen" it's always ridiculously priced, like over $5 per pound.

I wonder if those salmon burgers you can get at Gordon Food Service would be cost-effective for dogs. I get them for the humans in the house, we like them quite a bit and they are nice for those days when I would like something quick and easy. They are about $13 for 13, and are frozen.
