So proud of Xena's progress
« on: November 05, 2010, 10:01:43 PM »
I just wanted to brag on Xena a bit.  She's been doing really well and we've been getting compliments at class.

Her heeling has really come along and when we hit a rhythm, it's pretty to watch.  I've been able to work on my strides (longer and more natural) which let's Xena stride more evenly.  She spends most of the time heeling with her head up  :smitten:  My classmate, who's only about 5'4" and has a male Ridgeback, keeps saying she wants to trade legs.  :laugh4:

Her drop on recall is coming along nicely but slowly. Right now our homework is for Xena to drop in a box while I start working out distance.  She's pretty good at dropping (folding down instead of doing a butt-first down) but she started to take a step or two forward, so we're putting her in the 3-sided box to reinforce the drop without forward progress.

Her retrieve training is actually going pretty quickly - my trainer uses a very slow method, but Xena was testing out to the next level every week.  She's gone from just taking a dumbbell presented at her mouth, to a 1" reach, 6" reach, 12" reach - then we started practicing, at a separate time of day, the hold.  She's already up to 1 minute.   Our homework for this week is to work up to 1 1/2 minutes and start moving her from a sit to a stand.

In January, our class will move from being an Open class, to Open/Utility Foundations.  Our trainer is confident that Xena will be holding things like a pro, so we can start glove training along with signals.  I probably won't start on articles right away, just because articles are darned expensive!

That's fantastic, Julia!! I love it when people notice all your hard work paying off. You already know it's there, but when other's recognize it, it just makes you beam with pride. We had some really great comments in class last week too and the whole way home, I just smiled. You've worked really hard with Xena, and it shows. Great job!

Dawn - When it came to heeling, I actually didn't notice it until they pointed it out.   I think it was because it wasn't a "light bulb" moment, just things coming together over time. But once they said something, it was obvious!

   Sounds and looks great!  That's cute how Dash intently watches Xena practicing.  :smitten:  He's gonna be a competitor.  ;)

I wish I could find a better obedience club or trainer around here.  Koda and I have pretty much maxed out at our current club, which doesn't do much past basic obedience training and CGC, nothing as advanced as retrieving or dropping on recall, they teach UKC rally instead of AKC and focus on a lot of parades, picnics, parties, meetings, etc. that I'm not interested in.  I just want to train my dogs.  At least I have plenty of good training videos.  :)
