It's killing me!!
« on: June 24, 2010, 09:20:06 PM »
Anyone else seeing a major uptick in their local Boxer rescue's activity this summer?  Adopt a Boxer Rescue has had SOO many new dogs - both local and pulls from Southern shelters. They are desperate for fosters and I just wish we could help... but between finances and everything else, we can't  :'( :'(  I keep seeing all these sweet faces and it hurts my heart...  THIS SUCKS!!

Oh, and do you know one of the reasons the intake increases in summer? People going on vacation and they figure they have to dump the dogs before they leave.  :furious3:

I know two BIG shelters in other central Missouri cities are offering FREE adoptions right now due to an overload of pets.  Here, locally, we are trying to do more adoption events and we offer free spay/neuter just to ease the crunch.  We have more kittens than usual right now.

Sue - Yeah, I believe it's "free cat" month at our local SPCA.  They have to have some sort of free/discount event every summer because they get overloaded with cats and everyone only picks out kittens.   My co-worker adopted a sweet little torte who'd been at the shelter over a year!  So there's that sucky situation on top of my heart breaking for all the boxers.

It kills me too , but because of a bad experience we had while fostering Dave will not allow any more fostering in our home .

We're looking into one now where the owner boarded him at a vet's office while he went on vacation....and just never came back to get him.... :'(

I bet the number they gave the vet's office is bogus too, huh?   :furious3:  I guess it's better than just turning the dog loose though.  :wall:

We are seeing people turning over two and three boxers at a time. :( It really strains the entire system to have two or three to pull at a time and it is heartbreaking to leave even one behind. Last week I pulled a pair that had just been let loose in a field. At least if people surrender them, there is no holding period before they can be adopted out or pulled by rescue. Sometimes the dogs need medical attention and we have to wait out the holding period. It sucks when people just turn them loose.

We are always scrambling for foster homes but remember that there are lots of other ways to help out too.  We are always in need of transport help, volunteers to do home visits, shelter evaluations, fundraisers, help with pet fairs and adoption events.  Sometimes we just need a short term foster commitment so that a foster can go on vacation. You could contact your local rescue and let them know that you would like to get involved at least on some level and ask what their needs are.

Yeah, I'm on the Transport Yahoo! list, but since the rescue covers several states, we haven't been able to help out yet.  Same w/home visits and adoption events - none within a reasonable driving distance yet. I've been keeping an eye out, really hoping to help the first time they have anything remotely "local".

The boxer rescue I work with has had a ruff year with all the boxers coming in. In one month the had 80 owner surrender form submitted. That does not include the ones they pulled from the shelter that month. Its bad out there right now.

If you can not foster or give money you can always go and spend a day helping at the kennel. You can help feed, walk, pick up poop, wash bedding and give baths. Every little bit helps.
