Personally I think the fault lies with the owners not the dog...no baby should be left unattended with a pup.  Even Great dogs can have bad days...and believing that nothing will happen is almost always when something does.  If this baby was too small to go after the dog, then the baby might have been on the floor and the dog attacked...but still if this dog was so darn bad that it couldn't be rehomed...why was there a baby anywhere the dog could have bitten?  sumpun doesn't add up, and quite frankly I think the owners are to blame.

I hope the baby wasn't seriously harmed...

I agree 100%...something isn't adding up..!
Yep, I agree with this.

To be sure though, young kids don't have much sense, particularly between the ages of 2-4, so it's much easier said than done to teach those of that age to respect animals. Respecting anything consistently during those ages is a pretty difficult concept for that matter! ;)
That's where supervision comes in to play ;)

I agree. My little cousins are 2 and 4(I think  ) and when they come over I am always with them when Samson is around, he is very gentle with them, but hes still a playful pup. They are also learning how to act around a dog and they like to practice Samson commands with him, its so cute :smitten:

When my best friends 10mo old comes over, I put him on a leash.

Yes this is true...that's where the owner comes in.  It is THEIR responsibility to watch, teach, police, and just in general , be the RESPONSIBLE owner they should be when getting a pup, or for that matter having children.

When I wrote that post I was just responding to the posts talking about teaching kids respect etc and just saying that it depends on the ages involved. I hardly meant that means not supervising them because they don't understand yet.
