Advice on RAW
« on: March 29, 2010, 04:09:44 PM »
I found a source in my town that can supply chicken Necks for $0.45 a lb.  They also have chicken backs for $0.52 a lb.  From my research, for my two, both being around 45 lbs they would each get  2-3% of their body weight in meat a day.  I figured I'd want closer to 3% and thought I would start at about 2.75%.  This would be about 75lbs of meat a month for the two of them, about 90 lbs a month if I feed the cats raw too.  All in all, if I fed primarily chicken backs/necks with some add ins of organ meat (can get heart pretty cheap (less than $1/lb)) it would cost less than $10 a month more than what I pay now.  What I want to know, would it hurt the pups to feed mostly chicken with not a whole lot of variety...they would get eggs several times a week, organ meat a couple times a week, and garlic, kelp, brewers yeast and fish oil each day.  I also do marrow bones several times a month.  Would this be a good "starter" RAW diet?

That is about how I started...then I found other meat to give like turkey, fish, beef, venison and rabbit.  I did lots of searches to find all these tho.  Good luck

Does any of your husband's family hunt?  I bet they'd give you some meat unless they already keep it for themselves.....throwing some rabbit or venison into their diets would probably be good.

Yeah, hubby says he's positive he can get bones and scraps of mostly deer.  Also, would it be a good idea to have my husbands family save fish guts/bones/heads from when they fish?  they eat the fillets, but so much of those fish go to waste

Would he be able to get any meat instead of just bones or scraps?  The bones would be good for chewing but having a whole deer's worth of ground venison to use as their muscle meat would probably save you a good bit of money.

I don't know about the fish...I know Erik feeds a lot of whole fish, he might have an opinion on that part.

Most hunters do not eat venison ribs. We get those from family friends.
Same goes for liver and heart.

I cannot get my guys to eat a whole fish. I have a freezer full of freezer burnt fresh fish and I TRY to get my guys to eat them but they won't.  :wall:

Try chunking them up. Or grinding them perhaps.

I can sometimes trick Sophia by chopping them up small and hiding it in chicken or beef.  ::)
Not Strummer. He would not eat a chicken 1/4 today because it was covered in egg shells. BRAT.

I want to buy a grinder. I bet if I pulverize it they may never know.  :laugh4:
