Do females mark?
« on: September 26, 2009, 09:31:01 PM »
Kaycee just did the absolute WEIRDEST thing I've ever seen/heard of a dog do!!  She's 15 weeks next Wednesday and I THOUGHT we had been doing really really well on the potty training.  She had even started picking up the bell training, though she no longer does that and just chews the bells up.  Additionally, she has stopped giving us any indication that she needs to go out.  She simply stops mid run, squats, LOOKS AT US, and then pees.  But the weirdest thing she's ever done:  She jumped up to put her front paws on the edge of the LEATHER couch, and scoots her back legs into the couch. I thought she was just trying to jump on the couch, but just when I was about to say "off", she looks at me and starts to pee on the front of the couch!!  I've never seen or heard of a female getting into that position to pee before!!  She's always just squatted before.  Is Nature's Miracle ok to use on leather?  And what is up with this new pee position?!

She sounds like she is giving you some boxer puppy attitude.  I would keep her leashed to me at all times to make sure she goes potty where you intend for her to pee. A puppy is not fully house trained until almost a year IMO, and then still an accident can occur if you are not diligent in taking them outside. Your pup is still a little girl so more training is necessary...and I would look for some heavy duty bells...bell training is a great tool for house training, again IMO.

And yes, I too had a female that would occasionally lift her leg to piddle.

Nedra lifts her leg and Mia and Pixie mark trees when we're on walks. Pixie has backed her little hiney right up to a tree just so she could pee on it.  :smash:

LOL Oh my.... maybe the girl was the wrong choice out of the litter then. LOL  Just kidding.  Thanks for the leash suggestion... I will definitely start doing that again.

I agree w/either leashing her or limiting her movement.  Sounds like a typical regression - puppy starts doing well, humans think she 'gets it' so they aren't as watchful/strict, etc with how they are reinforcing the training, they found out they are wrong and have to take a step back in training.  Most all of us end up going through this at one time or another!

Bailey is still a pup too.. and I think that she does this same thing. But.. its more like she just goes back to the same spot everytime. And she does not pee and relieve herself.. she just tinkles a little and goes on her way. Weird? I wonder if there is some good stuff out there to keep them away from those spots?

Yep Abby marks everthing...lifts her leg occassionally too. Even Zoe started marking on walks...she backs her butt right up to the tree or bush.
