Royal Canin Canada Recalls Additional Cat and Dog Food Due to New Toxin

UPDATE: The toxin found in these foods is cyanuric acid - not melamine. This is the first recall attributed to cyanuric acid.

Royal Canin has discovered a new contaminant in rice gluten. This contaminant is cyanuric acid, which is chemically related to, but distinct from, melamine.

Honestly, it seems like all the recalls even on the Human grades are kibbles that are sold commercially.   I know the only two decent kibbles you can get in a petsmart or petco is Blue , Nutro Ultra, and Royal Canin.

Commercial stores like Walmart, Petco, Petsmart, Sam's Club etc.
I know the specialty stores that only sell holistic seem to not have any bags of food removed from their shelves.

Royal Canin and Nutro Ultra, Natural Balance are sold at Petco and Petsmart, however I have never seen them at the smaller stores that I have been to like - the Healthy Animal or Skiptons.

Nothing to my theory, just an observation.   :partybanana:

I have seen Natural Balance at some smaller stores - but I agree on the Blue Buffalo and Royal Canin.  I only usually see them in some of the larger chain stores.

Blue Buffalo is PetSmart's human grade brand. It's only sold at PetSmart.

I've never seen Natural Balance at PetSmart, and it's not listed on their website either.

Petco sells Natural Balance.  I bought the beef rolls for Zeus there.  When I was at the vet last weekend an older couple came in with a prettiest cat.  They were feeding her Royal Canin prescription food and she was showing signs of the poisoning.  I felt so bad for them.  Sandra asked me if I could wait while she did the blood and urine on the kitty.  I of course said yes.  I talked to the couple and they felt so bad about their kitty.  They adopted her from the Humane Society a few months earlier.

I buy my Natural Balance at a local pet store chain. It's not a giant chain, but it's not a mom and pop either.

The Petsmart here doesn't carry Natural Balance, in fact there are only two stores within a 3 hour drive of us that carry it. I was truly shocked to find that on the list, however I have come to the general conclusion that no commercial food may be safe by the time this is all over with.  :(
