Premium Edge is what I'd call an "OK" food - like the non-Ultra formulas of Nutro.

I see in the ingredients list that "chicken" is the first ingredient - that means it includes water weight, which means it would be lower on the list after baking. "ocean fish" doesn't specify a type of fish, so that's questionable origin to me, might be meal from industry left overs.  There are 3 types of grains and 2 other starches, so it is a little heavy in that respect.

I don't think any one ingredient makes it low quality (except maybe the ocean fish) but the complexity and combination isn't so hot.

hmmm...interesting.  I think I'm gonna stick with it though...Jetta does well on all foods and Bo has finally gained a couple pounds and has soft fur for the first time on it.  May not be the best, but it seems to be working.

Taste of the wild is a great food at a good price. I get the large bag(30lb?) for about $42.00 last my two a month or so. But they eat less and poo less!

Yes, the price ranges from just under $1/lb to just under $2/lb for the fancier stuff. But when you factor in the amount they eat, you end up paying less for food. And, many would argue, less for vet care since these foods don't have a lot of the garbage and chemicals that you find in a lot of the typical "premium" brands like Iams and Science Diet.

Many dogs on the forum only require about 2 cups of kibble per day (one of mine eats less than that), and I believe the highest I've heard of is 4 cups per day.  Last I looked, 4 cups per day was usually the minimum amount people fed with brands like Iams.

Ditto Julia. I am was the person Julia mentioned fed 4cups per day but that was for a few reasons 1) I have a big yard which my pups spend lots of time running loose in. 2) my Beas had a bad bout of giarida as a pup and that out him behind some on the weight scale and 3) my Beas used to be a picky eater (before we got the Peanut).

Now they get 3-3.5 cups per day and a 30 pound bag of Canidae lasts about 2-2.5 weeks for two boxers

It's not just you....I think a few people, including myself (Dawn/Rubidawg and Lisa/ltournat are a couple others I think feed along those lines), feed 4 cups a day (or have at one time).  Some dogs just have higher metabolisms than others (lucky me ending up with two of them  ::)), but they definitely don't make up the majority.

Jetta gets 2 cups a day here and Bo get 3-3.5 (used to need 5 at one time)

Why isn't Acana on there???

I don't think it was included on the "official" list that the Whole Dog Food Journal put out last year.  I think the food companies have to submit applications or something to be added to their list, but I'm not sure.

We used the Whole Dog Food Journal's list and supplemented it with some foods that are widely used and well-liked among members.  I think at the time we made this list, no one had tried Acana.  I know some members tried it later in the year last year and liked it, but that was after we did this list.

I will look into doing a list for 2010...I guess we kind of dropped the ball on that one!
