AHHH-- Overwhelmed, though I'm glad to have a list. With Merrick's...which food should you buy??

Finding the right formula is really a dog-by-dog decision.  I personally wouldn't do a grainless food with high protein content for a puppy, but otherwise the list is pretty much "pick something out, see if it works."

Is there a site where this list came from?  I'd like to repost on another forum but would like to cite the source.

:partybanana: YAY! that the food I feed is on the list!  :partybanana:

So it's probably best to buy small bags in the beginning to see what works. I'd hate to get a 30lb bag home only to find out it's trouble! I know Alisha feeds her dogs a raw diet. She said we could just switch all at once over to kibble. My husband says: what if she won't eat it? I told him I'm pretty sure if she's hungry she'll eat! :)

Would you recommend a puppy formula until 6 months in that case?

It isn't from another site - it is based on the Whole Dog Journal list, but also has additions that come from the experience of our members.

Rachel - You need to give a food about a month to know if it is working, so I'd probably get a medium sized bag to see.  Also, many companies/stores will allow you to return a bag if it isn't working for your dog.  As far as a brand, it really varies by your area (what is available) and what works... for a puppy I'd go with something under 30% protein.  There are varying opinions on what protein percentage is appropriate for pups - since the typical 20-26% protein isn't harmful and over 30% *might* be, I err on the side of caution.

I would not feed a puppy formula. Find an adult formula that will work.

I agree.  Most "puppy forumulas" are just sales gimics....most adult formulas are just fine for puppies.

Ah well I wish I would have read this about 5mins ago.  LOL  Hubby just called from the pet store in Duluth and asked what type of food to get.  I told him "make sure it's a puppy formula".  Oh well.  We are going to try Wellness.  They didn't have Canidae or TOTW so I had no idea what else to tell him to look for, short of going thru all the bags and reading the ingredients. LOL  So thanks for the list!!!!
