Making my own hot dog treats, anyone make those?
« on: February 05, 2009, 08:08:33 PM »
Okay its basically one package of hot dogs (I got the lean all beef kind)

Cut them in strips length wise and then cutting them in to little pieces width wise.

Put them on a paper towel and cook them in the microwave for 5 minutes.  Let cool, and then repeat for another 5 minutes.

It makes them like a jerky.

I've never done it before, so I'll let you know how it goes.

But if its like a jerky and real dry, should I refrigerate it?

I'd probably refrigerate it just in case - still a chance it'd go bad, since you don't make them completely dry. At least the people in my club don't make the hot dogs completely dry. Not wet and fairly hard, but still greasy.

I'd prob go easy on the hot dogs. They are fatty and full of sodium.
might as well ref them too.

Oh their just for training class.  Probably not Heidi as she already knows the deal, but since Monday is Koby's first day, I want something good and smelly!

My dogs get boiled chicken for training treats. They LOVE them! Rubi will do anything for her chicken bites, and much healthier than hot dogs.  I did hot dogs once and my gawd...the gas and tummy troubles she had afterwards were Soooo not even worth it. LOL And to be honest, she got bored with them in class. LOL

My pups have been sooo happy since I started making them chicken (either just cooked in a pan or boiled) - it's got enough smell, it's tasty, and definitely no stinky side effects!

I gave Max hot dog pieces when we were going to all his training classes - just cut up, not "cooked" or anything.
 He just LOVED them, and really enjoyed his classes - learned so well.

I'm wondering, now, looking back, if all the preservatives and chemicals in those hot dogs aided or caused in his early-onset of cancer...   :'(
Any thoughts??

Hard to say, cancer is such an enigma when it comes to cause. Would you say the hot dogs made up a significant portion of his diet for a prolonged time? It seems more likely it's a cumulative effect of preservatives/chemicals in their lives, plus genetic predisposition.

He only received the hot dogs during the class periods and maybe a little at home to finish off the bag we didn't use in class.
But, we went through Basic Obedience, CGC class, clicker training, pet therapy training....  Several months' duration of classes before he was 1.5 years old.  His first cancer spot was before he was 2.

But the first cancer was MCT, right? I'd have to go back and search, but I thought that MCT was thought to be more of an allergy/immune-related cancer.

Yes, it was MCT.  I know so little...   :noob:
To me, cancer is cancer no matter what causes it!
But, I'm learning!!   :idea2:
