Pros and Cons of Rescue
« on: April 16, 2007, 05:43:03 PM »
Hey all - I'm working on a brochure for my technical writing class and I am comparing and contrasting breeders, animal shelters, and breed-specific rescues.  I was trying to come up with a pro/con list for each one and was wondering if you guys would help me out.  Just let me know if you have any more pros/cons of rescues or shelters.  I only rescued a dog once from a shelter and that was a long time ago.  So I figured I would ask you guys who were more knowledgable about rescues and shelters.

For rescue,

Pro:
-Staff is knowledgable about the breed and will know if that breed will fit into your family
-Thorough review process so your family is placed with the perfect dog
-Trial run with the dog
-Saving a dog and showing it the love and tenderness it had not seen before
-Dog has already been spayed/neutered by the rescue
-Dogs are fostered by families and rehabilitated to good health

Con:
-Often need a fenced in yard (not sure if this is specific to boxers or not)
-Sometimes will not adopt out to families with young children
-(not really a con, but) usually has dogs over 1 year instead of young puppies (depends on what family is looking for)

Animal Shelters:

Pro:
-Has many different breeds and mixes of dogs
-Saving a dog from a life of hardship and/or being euthanized
-Animal shelters are located in most towns and counties (don't have to travel a long distance)

Con:
-No trial run
-Not as thoroughly evaluated or rehabilitated as dogs in breed-specific rescues
-Often have to have your dog spayed/neutered on your own (not included in adoption fee)

Rescue:

Con: Not all rescues are as reputable as others, still need to do your homework
Con: may take longer than 12 hrs to adopt a dog (most often 2-3 weeks)
Pro: Continuous support for health and behavior issues (most likely though not in monetary form)
Con: Adoption fee is generally higher than a shelter but less than a breeder

that is all I can think of right now

Rescue

Pro:  The dog is usually houstrained and started on  basic obedience.
The foster family can take in another dog from a shelter once you adopt through them.

At least here...
Rescue - Con - Will not generally place a dog of the same sex in a family
          - Pro - Take time to assess the dog and work with them if there are issues (aggression, etc)

I would just change that to "may not place a dog with another dog of the same sex". It's by no means a general rule, I'd say it's very much case by case depending on the rescue. Actually, I'd say you might just say that the rescue will be "pickier" (not the best term) about the homes they adopt to. This is both a pro and a con, depending on your perspective at the time.
