Traveling with the pups
« on: March 16, 2007, 06:49:32 PM »
Ok, so in two weeks we are going on a week-long car/camping trip to the beach with the boys and I was wondering if anyone has any advice? We have taken weekend trips with them before, but this is the first time they will go camping and see the ocean. They are 5 months old now, but pretty well behaved, as well behaved as two boxer puppies can be anyway ::) I was also wondering about doggie backpacks, are they too young? any good recommendations? etc. Any help I can get would be great!  :beam:

I wouldn't have them carry packs at that age, or let them do any extensive hiking/walking. I don't know how far you'll be travelling or how much time you'll be spending in the car or how well your boys do in the car, so I can't really say how that might go. Koda went on a 6-hr. drive with us once and was fine - he slept the whole way. We took a day trip once to Cleveland with Koda and Lucy that took about 3 hours up and 3 hours back. They were fine on that trip too. Mine always tend to sleep a lot in the car.

About once a month we go visit my family which is a 2 1/2 hour trip each way. They do really well in the car, pretty much just sleep. We are breaking up the driving a ton and won't spend more than 3 hours at a time in the car. We don't really plan on doing a ton of hiking, more just walking trails, playing on the beach and such.

I think they should be fine as long as they can stretch out a bit in the car & get a little exercise in between.

I don't think I would use the backpacks yet...I think they are way to young for that.

All my dogs with the exception of Ollie have been great riders.

I would skip the backpacks.  But they should be fine as long as there aren't any really long (forced) walks involved and they can rest when they want to.  Sounds like a fun trip!

I too would avoid the back packs.

Also I recommend putting them in their crates while driving.  It's safer that way.

No backpacks, at their age you are likely to injure their joints. Crates are the safest way to travel with pets, if you don't plan to use them there are also doggy seatbelts. Otherwise I hope they are well mannered in the car. Be sure you let them stop frequently so that they don't strain their muscles and joints too much. Hope you guys have fun.

Be sure to have some dramazine or however you spell that motion sickness medicine.  You might just need it.  Have you thought about purchasing life vests for them while at the beach?

Hope you have a great time and travel safe!!

I'm sure they will do great in the car - Brody had to go 6 hours in the car at 8 weeks when we got him and he did great.

I was at the vet yesterday and they said dramamine is fine to give dogs in case of motion sickness, though I'm not sure of the dosage.

Have fun with the pups on the trip.  I drive 4 hours in the car with Felix and he normally just sleeps.
