Well... you can practice stacking at any age...but I would wait until your pup has had all its shots before taking it to conformation class.  We have some 4 month old lab puppies in our class.  Mostly its just getting then used to walking on the leed

Generally a kennel or obedience club will offer conformation classes - usually just 'drop-in' classes which are like practice shows, but some areas are lucky enough to have actual 'how to handle your dog' classes for a set number of weeks.

We start stacking, leashwork, free-stacking as soon as possible - short short sessions at first, like a minute or so - and Patsy, Emma, and Evie started classes as soon as they came to us (8 weeks for Patsy, 12 for E&E).  (We generally have a pretty big conformation class, so they don't have to pay attention for too long at once ;) and we can 'break out' and work on other things while we're waiting for our turn with the 'judge'.)

If you are interested in showing I would suggest hitting a local show and asking the handlers there if they are local and if they can recommend a conformation class to you.

I know the South Shore Kennel club does confirmation classes as well as the Cape Cod Kennel Club.

I was just wondering at what age you should practice your stacking and get them enrolled in the class.

We started Nikki in conformation classes when she was a tad over 4mos, w/ Bru, we didn't have classes to attend.. they're too far, but attended a few matches and the IABCA shows before 6mos.  As far as stacking, we started w/ the pups at 4wks, and work a little each day as the pup gets older.. not even necessarily outside on a lead, but even if you're just watching TV around the house, have the pup in front of you and stack he/she real quick, and work on tickling that tail. :)  I think the earlier you can start getting them used to that position, the better off you're going to be.  Of course keep it all fun, so the pup doesn't end up hating it!

Thank Kat -

I am just compiling info for next year.  I have seen two possible planned breedings for 2008 & 2009 from the kennel I am getting my pup from, and want to make sure I get all in order for when he arrives - which that may not be until the end of next year - we shall see, unless something else happens, and a nice show pup is produced!!

Yes we have selected a kennel.  They have some great dogs who have done very well in Europe in both competition and in show.  The owner of the kennel has become a good friend.   I have sent various messages to US show kennels who show Germans and they said high remarks about him.   He is honest and sincere.  He does this as a hobby and love for the breed.  He is a business man with two family resteraunts.   Some of his dogs share the same pedigree as my Hanna.

I am not sure when our male will arrive, because we need to see what the planned litters produce in 2008 or 2009.  Also three of his females are retired in 2007.  And he is having to make some adjustments.    And when something does come up, I am honored to have a show prospect from Von Das Cer Gebirge Kennel.  As well as he is eager to see how one of his dogs shows in the US.   I will be relying on a lot of help from everyone when my show prospect gets here!

Here is a picture of some of his awards

Actually all standards are about the same, it's just the tendencies that change from country to country.

Are the health test requirements the same over there? I thought they were the thing that was different.

Not sure on Health Requirements but will def. get you the answer for that.  I just e mailed the question.

The FCI has the standards, what I mean to say was the "Ethics Code" maybe difference since there was not one that I could find except each boxer club from each country seemed to have one of their own.

Sorry for the confusion!   I do know that different countries have banned docking of tails and ears.

I was just going to ask about that - I see some of their recent litters have tails.  Is it illegal in their country, or just their option?

Ha ha- yes you have to be patient with me, as i am still learning things!  haha

Its optional in their country.   So cropping is personal preference as of now.  Germany, Italy have bans.    The kennel is located in Serbia, and there is no ban.
