Title: Edy's foot / lump
Post by: Bruins_Boxer on October 01, 2014, 10:00:49 AM

I went to trim Edy's nails yesterday and noticed a lump on her foot . This was not there 2 weeks ago when I did her nails . I did not do them last week because we had an unplanned trip we had to make and never did their nails that week .
When I first noticed it it was still covered with hair , a little yellowish / caloused looking but completely covered . This morning it looks like the pics below . It is hard to see in the pic but it is raised not flat and is about the size of a quarter..

I plan to get her to the vet but am wondering if anyone has seen something like this before .
Of course my mind goes straight to it being something horrible .

Looks exactly what Abby had just about a month or so ago. The vet said she thought it started out as either an ingrown hair follicle or some bump that had abcessed and then gotten infected. She cleaned it and told us to put a sock on it and maybe gold bond to keep it dry and gave her antibiotics.  Once the swelling went down we realized that she had a small bump / wound on the bottom of her foot in between her pad that was causing all the issues.  It eventually did go.

Good luck and keep us posted!

It could be a lot of things, of course, but I wouldn't rule out a histiocytoma (which is probably what you want it to be, if it's not an irritation or insect bite). I don't know if they tend to start out covered with hair, though. The histios we've had were raised, red, not especially weepy, not totally smooth, and didn't bother the dog at all (or the dog didn't bother them, although the placement of this one might make a difference). They'd pop up suddenly -- quarter size seems about right -- and go away in a couple of months. Some people say white iodine or colloidal silver get rid of them faster.

Of course the vet check will tell you for sure what it is, but don't panic just yet! :)

could be an interdigital cyst (we've had a few of those over the years) or hystio

try soaking in warm Epsom salts a few times a day- a gentle squeeze may expel puss.

dry completely and apply liquid kelp (iodine)

She has hystios before but they all looked more like a small wart . This looks different but I guess( hope ) it could be a hystio .

It was totally covered in fur yesterday and not red , just normal skin colored calloused and yellowins on her fur .

I did look for a cut or injury but I did not see any . She does seem bothered by it and will pull her foot away if I try to touch it .

Grady had one exactly like that on the back of his foot. It was a histio. We had him wearing a sock to keep it clean, cleaned it every so often. Had some spray from the vet, but I stopped using it after once or twice. Just a sock, cleaned it up and it eventually went away.

Star had one that looked like that, it was a histio, we ended up having to remove it because it grew very quickly after being dormant for a while

Abe had something like that once.  I soaked his foot in Epsom salts and kept an eye on it.  It took a while, but finally resolved.  If it's bothering her a lot, I'd have a vet look at it.  Maybe they can do something to speed up the healing?

I guess I will calm down a bit .

I have never seen a hystio look like this , but then again the one inside Remy's ear looked unusual to me as well . I am used to seeing the ones that look like a pencil eraser .

Thanks everyone.

Not sure what it is, but sounds like lots of non-scary options! Hope it is a simple fix.

Sorry it took so long to update . Too many things going on .

The vet said they do not know 100% what it is , not a hystio though and nothing abnormal when they aspirated it , though the said there was not really anything to draw out . .
They think it was some type of insect or spider bite even though I could not see and puncture marks . As of this morning the fur is actually starting to grow back .
