Title: Grain Free vs Grain
Post by: whitepupzoe on June 17, 2013, 08:42:51 AM
I don't know what is up with my 2 but they seem to be on a "I'm not eating this crap" kick. Neither one of them want to eat their food...even with cheese, etc. on it. I am thinking of switching, but with Abby's anal gland issues I'm a little nervous. I feel like she needs "grains" to keep her normal.

Does anyone have any problems with anal glands on the grain free food?  I think George can eat anything...so I don't worry about him.

I feed grain free, and have not had any issues with anal glands. :fingerscrossed:

Did Abby go on grain-free and then have the issues?  Wondering if you are worried w/history or just nervous about changing in general because of her anal issues.

Dash can't do grain free because his urine turns into a solid  :wall:  (tons of struvites) ... I think it is great for most dogs, but some bodies just balance well on it.  He got the same thing when I tried to do mostly raw food.

Have you tried fixing him a dish of oatmeal once a week or so? I've always had to give Viktor some cooked oatmeal once and a while, and when I make my own food I put oatmeal or wild rice in it since he has issues with his anal glands and constipation.

Abby was on grain free when we first got her 6 years ago, I can't remember why we switched her back to grain food. She only recently starting having the anal gland issues, so bad that she has ruptured twice...yuck.  I guess I could try a small bag of something and see if she does ok on it.

I've been feeding grain free for years without issue. But I've never had a dog with anal gland issues, so couldn't say either way if it would help or makes things worse for Abby. I'd say try it out, do a slow switch and just see how she does. Poor thing.

I had a couple on grain free. Could never get their poop to firm up on it.
