For those who have had their dogs titered, how many were shown to have enough antibodies and how many weren't?  What were their previous vaccination records like before being titered?

I'm having Koda titered tomorrow for parvo and distemper, first time I will have that done to a dog.  He just had two boosters of those as a puppy, and one rabies, and then just had his second rabies vaccination a little over a week ago, since that one is required by law.

I'm just wondering if previously vaccinated dogs usually show enough antibodies in their titer tests or not.

I am interested also. Samson got booster shots today, I was going to titer him. But, I really cant afford a $130+ test right now Tongue But the clinic I went too for the shots does titers, by appointment only, so I will do that when he is due again.

I just had Edy titered , she came back as protected for both parvo & distemper.
My papers say -a titer greater than 1:5 indicates a immunologic response to vaccination.

She had her initial set of puppy shots with the 1 year booster and no shots since - she will be 4 this May . She has had 2 rabies shots .

Otis only had his puppy shots and was titered two times since. Both times showed vaccine antibodies still apparent in his system. He will be 4 this summer.

You might want to check into what Dr Dodds charges for titers - I think she charges $40 for parvo/distemper. Of course you would need to pay for a blood draw at your vet and there would be shipping involved but it might end up cheaper.

This has been my experience with titers so far......

Star - has been vaccinated a fair number of times since when I started out with her I wasn't really watching what I was doing with vaccinations. She must have been about 3 when I titered her for the first time - and she has NEVER shown any immunity for parvo on the titer. Even if we vaccinate her, wait 2 weeks and then titer. So, in discussion with my vet we decided for no more parvo/distemper vaccinations for her since they don't appear to do anything - and obviously no more titers. She may well have immunity towards them - the kind that can't be picked up on a titer - but there is no way to tell.

Skye - had her puppy shots, and then instead of giving her a booster shot at 1 year I did a titer and she had immunity for parvo/distemper. She is currently 3 years old, and has passed all of her titers - and has never had a shot since her puppy series.

Trigger - had his puppy shots, but when I titered him at 1 year of age he failed his parvo titer (passed distemper) so I went ahead and gave him the vaccination. He has not yet been re-titered.

Thanks for the info.  Koda had blood drawn today to be sent to Michigan State University for testing, and I'm supposed to get results in 7-10 days.  Fingers Crossed he shows immunity and doesn't have to be vaccinated again.

I was charged a $38 exam fee, but wanted to have him checked out anyway (heart sounds GREAT the vet said and no problems detected thumbsup ), plus $9.50 for blood drawing and the distemper/parvo titer test was $45.

Wow, maybe it's just me but that all sound really cheap! Except my exam fee is about the same.

Is your vet a cardio specialist too, or just gen. vet?

That was the more expensive, big city (Grand Rapids) fancy vet too!  Michigan's cost of living is quite low which is part of the reason I moved here.  The only vet I know of anywhere around here that charges more than them is the emergency vet, also in Grand Rapids.

Koda was examined, vaccinated for rabies and had a fecal sample tested by a small town vet several miles away and the exam fee was $18.50, $10.00 for the rabies vaccination and $15 for fecal sample testing.

There are various specialists at the Grand Rapids vet, but unfortunately no cardiologists.  I am planning to take him to a cardiologist, E-vet has one, for an echocardiogram when he's around two years old.

I gave both of mine their puppy shots and then 1-year boosters.  Bella is due for her first set of titers late this year.
