Swollen after neuter
«

Ok..so Im not used to having a boy dog. Riley was neutered on Thursday, he came home and he pretty much "deflated". Well today he looks like he was never neutered, his testicles are as big as before. His penis also looks like its swollen. The incision looks good, not red or anything. He was fine up until today...he is very sleepy, not wanting to play or even get up. He did eat all his lunch.
Normal? Should I be concerned? Al is calling the vet when he gets home and will take him back if necessary.

yes, this is normal...I've had well over 50+ male dogs post neuter in my home. Some have even swollen to the size of lemons...They all handle it differently. Some do fine and act as if nothing happened and some are in visable pain afterwards. It is nothing that a little pain med and crate rest wont help. He needs to be kept calm, no playing for a few days....

Ok thanks...that makes me feel better. I think we let him over do it a bit this weekend....he seemed fine, but I guess now he is paying the price for our stupidity.

Oh Lordy be...keep that boy calm. You know, they can pop back open and that isnt a good thing...infection can set in then...plus if he was done like most these days he is super glued on the outside and stiched inside...those stiches can pop...then they would have to go back in again. Put that boy up...no more play time for a least a week after a neuter. Good Luck!!

Thanks. He does have external stitches...maybe 6 of them. Do they take longer to heal when they are older...He is 4 yrs old.

Aww, poor little sadsack, hope you are able to keep him calm a bit longer! Wonder if his potential homes are going to ask if he's really been neutered?
Now I feel well-prepared in the case that I ever wind up neutering Dash. Swollen sack question? Check!

Nope...the external stiches seem to make them itch more so that is why they chew...make sure he doesnt chew...and pups do tend to bounce back sooner but he'll be fine. I've had 6+ year olds neutered and they were fine.

LOL...yeah having a male opens up a whole new realm of questions.
I think we will wait a little bit before he goes to his new home. At least til the stitches come out and swelling goes down.

LOL! Yes, I had a great dane that was swollen to the size of a grapefruit...Ouch!!! I did take him in but the doctor just laughed at me and said "Elisha, he had bigger testicles...so he had more room to swell" Talk about

That sounds like a good plan. Make sure he gets the all-clear before moving him to a new home.
You are doing great, keep it up!
I know it's hard.. both fostering and having to ask embarrassing boy-part questions!

Could be worse - try noticing an odd chaffed spot on your dog's "boys" while riding in the car w/your 16 yr old BIL.
Of course, the only reason I even noticed such a small spot in such a personal place was that I was stuffed in the backseat w/two dogs while the guys got the front seats. Every time Dash stood up, I got up close and personal!

Brody got a little swollen after he was neutered - probably because the next day he was up and ready to go again! So it was my fault that he didn't have as much rest as he should have. I think I did put some ice or a cold cloth on his poor little change purse to help the swelling go down.

Poor Riley being "inspected" all the time. Crate that poor boy and leave him be for goodness sake!
