This shows the process pretty well, and also shows that it's a pretty painless and quick procedure in most cases.

Geeze, she's really squeezing...

And yeah, even though I've seen nasty brown chunks coming out of Xena, the greenish slime is still a little  barf

Well, given the info in the video, I tried Xena again. It was a little tricky w/out Aaron helping, but I tried not to be afraid of applying some pressure this time.

I got nothing.  Does this mean they might be empty?  She felt a little "concave" - nothing like what she's felt like when she was becoming impacted.

Why would a pup get impacted/infected?  I only had 1 pup (Hailey) that had this problem, until Willie, who I noticed had a bit of a problem when we were camping but since they were in Ex-Pens when we camp (if not being walked or in the Banana) they get RMB and I noticed when we got home the inflamation was down and the  next day gone...I like Hulks idea, and I can attest to it working, because I didn't even know that I was doing something right!

How do you even know that this needs to be done?  Is it just when they have butt juice coming out? laugh4

It doesn't seem to be predictable, except that dogs with consistently soft stool would be more prone since the glands wouldn't be pushed on when they pooped.

Xena has firm poop, but she still gets impacted somehow. The one really bad abcess she had, the vet said her glands were full of hard, dry stuff - so maybe her issue isn't firm poop, but too-firm anal liquid.

I've been giving her probiotic some of the time, but didn't see any proof that it did or didn't work. Hard to say since her incidents were over a year apart.

Lisa - The glands are overly full if they start expressing on your stuff. Other (earlier) signals can be excessive licking, some dogs chase their butts. Although Xena nub chases all the time when her rear is healthy.  Xena's rear starts to look slightly firm on either side if she's already getting impacted (so it's a bit too late for simple expression  Sad).

Julia, it sounds like Xena's are empty. 2thumbsup

Lisa, sometimes you'll notice a smell, or notice they are taking an unusual interest in their butt. Usually when an adult dog chases it's tail, it indicates full anal sacs. I always get frustrated when I see people laughing at their dog chasing its tail because the dog is probably uncomfortable and in need of relief and people are not responding to its needs. Also, some dogs will scoot their butts along the ground or floor trying to express the glands. Sometimes if you don't notice the subtle signs you might be shocked to find that the glands will express all by themselves, either when the dog is playing and excited, or when he is relaxed and snoozing away on your bed or furniture. Or the front seat of your new car. brood

I wonder if Buddy's need to be expressed.  I sometimes see poop stains on the blankets in the basement, and I know they are from him.  However, he isn't incessantly licking back there, chasing his tail or scooting.  I just think he is dirty laugh4  You couldn't pay me enough to express those though, lol laugh4

If they are expressing on his bedding then he probably wouldn't get bad enough to pester his bottom? Although I don't think it'll look like poop if it's anal juice. Maybe it's brown, but generally it's a liquid, not a semi-solid like poop smears would appear to be.

Wouldn't it serve Andy right to find out his dog has mild anal sac issues?  Tongue
