I KNEW this was going to happen!

We took Onyx out with us to the little festival in our downtown yesterday. We had walked no more than a block from our car when a young man came running up behind us asking us to stop, is our dog registered and would we be interested in breeding our dog to his WHITE boxer!
I politely said, no, our dog is spayed and besides you should NEVER breed a white boxer. he said, 'oh, he's not ALL white, he has a brown spot on his ear'. I told him that made no difference, that white boxers should NEVER be bred for a variety of reasons. I also told him that shelters and rescues are over flowing with puppies that are the result of that sort of poorly thought out breedings. I also told him his dog would be a better family pet if he was neutered (he had 2 little kids with him) and that he'd be doing his dog a huge favor by preventing him from possible testicular cancer and other health issues. All that seemed to go right over his head as he just said, it's such a shame you had her spayed.
Then, a little while later, another idiot stopped us to ask where in the world we got a black boxer and he knew someone who would be interested in breeding with his dark brindle. Lord, I never really thought Onyx was going to create such a stir when we take her out. I wish I had a nickle for every person who said, I've never seen a black boxer. On a positive note, every little kid who came running up to her was greeted very calmly and without any sign of fear or trepidation. Onyx does VERY well in crowds and noise! Her beautiful behavior got lots of complements too!

As they say, 'You can't fix stupid!' We can try, but some people are too far gone. Glad she was so good for the rest.

I can't believe people come up to a strange person and ask to breed with their dog. That is rude..and ridiculous.

Ugh people are so stupid! I lost track of all the people wanting to either breed their dog with Abby or Zoe ... or asking if I had any other puppies available (when they see George).

That used to happen to me fairly often with Zaynah, when we lived in a more populated area. While walking my dogs strangers driving by would stop their vehicles to inquire about her sex and reproductive status, whether I'd be interested in breeding her to their "great" male, etc., despite Zaynah being BYB and far off standard. I'd tell them that besides her being spayed she wasn't breeding quality because she couldn't be competitive at any sort of show plus all the health tested required would be too expensive and too much risk of losing her to pregnancy or delivery, etc. but I could tell most of it went right over their heads as they babbled on about how much money we could make.
I even had one person stop wanting to know if I'd let Artax breed their female Lab mix.
My current neighbor thinks I'm nuts for having a male and female that I paid a lot of money for and am showing but will never breed them. He's over there waiting for his female Mastiff puppy to come in heat, breed his male, make lots of puppies and money for him. Of course they're BYB, from the same breeder and probably closely related, plus strictly outside dogs with little or no vet care so he probably won't even notice when she goes into labor, hope she doesn't need a C-section or any other help.
When I was buying my new car last week met a guy who seemed like a good dog person at first, gave me water for Artax who was waiting in my car and had pictures of his Chesapeake Bay Retriever on his phone to show me. He looked quite large for that breed, both in height and weight, but I told the guy he looked nice only to have him launch into a story about how he paid $600 whole dollars for the dog but it was a great deal because he's bred him 4-5 times and got pick of the litter each time and sold them for at least $600 each. I asked if he was into showing and he said no but "people who know about this breed" told him he was a great specimen. And he weighs 120 pounds which is of course awesome because bigger is always better.
Some (most) people will just never learn.

That bigger is always better idea is pretty prevalent around here too. I've had a couple of people tell me Onyx looks kinda small since they once had a boxer, or know someone who has a boxer that is 90lbs or more!
